Chapter One Look Inside

“There’s nothing to be worried about, look at Regina’s track record. No way she’s got this wrong,” Jamie said reassuringly as we sat in the barbecue area.
Today my match would be arriving, and to say I was nervous and on edge was an understatement.
“What if I’m the odd one out and there’s no Calling? What if she hates me?” I dared to say, and Jamie’s laughter rang out as he slapped my shoulder.
“Eli, relax, you’re overthinking it, she’ll be the perfect one for you. Trust Regina, I know I am,” he said, that promising smile alleviating a fraction of my unease.
“Do you think my hair looks okay?” I mumbled as I touched my hair instinctively. As soon as Regina had said I was the next match, I’d asked the women if one of them could cut my hair. Rachel had taken charge, giving me a nice fade cut that the other women were impressed with. I’d gotten some tips from the guys, and Crystal, Patrick’s mom who’d taken a shine to me, had given me pointers on how to woo my match. This had turned into all the women telling me their thoughts, which had become overwhelming.
Be attentive, ask questions, and make sure I treated her right, that was the gist of it. Pretty hard to screw up there.
“Your hair looks fine, stop stressing,” Jamie said, his face softening as I tried to center myself, my wolf pacing nervously within me. It was whining and pushing against my skin, eager to see who my match was, but the unease that perhaps Regina had finally gotten one wrong ate at me.
“Eli, everything’s going to be fine, just breathe. I can smell your nerves,” Jamie said with a smirk as he squeezed my shoulder.
I knew I needed to relax, Regina hadn’t failed us yet, why would this be any different?
“I wonder what it’ll be like for me,” Jamie mused as he looked in the direction of the lodge wistfully.
A pang of sympathy rippled through me at his small smile. He was the last one of our Pack without a match, and I knew I’d have felt left out being the last one, but he was taking it in stride. That was Jamie for you, carefree and chill with everything, although I knew it was more a front than anything.
He’d had a rough run, and sometimes those who’d had it rough had the most understanding and laidback natures of them all.
“I’m sure she’ll be perfect as well,” I said, and he just shrugged nonchalantly.
“I’m in no rush, I trust fate,” he said easily, giving me that relaxed smile.
I knew seeing all our mated brothers was getting to him just as much as it had started to get to me. So much love and happiness all around, something we each longed for, although Jamie always shrugged it off and said he’d trust fate, and until then, he was happy on his own.
Not me, I knew I wanted a mate.
I focused, hearing the faint voices from the lodge, my heart skipping a beat as my wolf stiffened within me.
